Romanian Police: 90% of the country’s roads have a single lane per way, which affects traffic safety and travel time

About 90% of the national roads in Romania have one lane per way, and this has an impact both on traffic safety and on travel time, according to representatives of the Romanian Police.

The Romanian police published a new edition of the Road Safety Bulletin. The document includes an analysis of serious road accidents produced in 2016, a comparison for the 2012-2016 period and a chapter on serious traffic accidents among the elderly.

One of the relevant conclusions is that in 2016 the number of serious road accidents was lower by 13.5% than in 2015.

“Approximately 90% of the national network is on the one-way standard road standard, which impacts both travel time and traffic safety,” the document reads.

In the last 5 years, the most common causes of serious traffic accidents have been the indiscipline of pedestrians (irregular crossing of the road, presence of pedestrians on the roadside or other deviations of pedestrians) and speed (irregular or inadequate to road conditions) leading to the production of about 41% of them.
