Romania posts second-fastest increase of new car registrations in EU in Q1

The new passenger car registrations in Romania rose by 28.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, to 28,643 units, according to data published on Wednesday by European auto industry association ACEA.

Romania posted the second-fastest growth rate among the 28 EU member states in the first quarter, after Hungary (+29.8 percent), but still remains a small market for car manufacturers – the 17th out of 28 EU member states, ACEA data show.

In the first quarter of 2018, Romania was a smaller market for carmakers than Hungary (31,609 new car registrations), Portugal (63,139) and the Czech Republic (67,873), countries which have about half the population of Romania.

New car registrations in Romania rose 17.5 percent year-on-year in March, to 8,122 units, according to ACEA.

Overall, 4.17 million new cars were registered in the European Union during the first quarter of 2018.
