Bucharest to ban cars for a day
Car and motorcycle traffic may be banned in Bucharest for one day if the city’s general council approves a proposal from four of its members. This could happen on September 22, local Digi24 reported.
The initiative, which would be a first in the Romanian capital’s history, aims to determine the city’s residents to walk more and use public transport. The day chosen for this experiment is a Saturday, when car traffic in Bucharest is usually lower.
However, there will also be exceptions to the car ban, such as ambulances, police cars, fire trucks and taxis. Moreover, the people who prove that they have to use their personal cars may also be allowed to pass.
The proposal will be discussed in the General Council’s meeting on Thursday, September 6. Some 245 European cities in 14 countries already ban car traffic at least one day every year.
