Ford Otosan and Mars Logistics have launched a new intermodal transport route between Ford Otosan’s Craiova plant and Turkey. Under this new system, components will be transported from Turkey to Romania, and vehicles manufactured in Romania will arrive in Turkey, both by rail. This transition aims to reduce emissions by 63 percent compared to road transport, making logistics operations more efficient and economical.
The new intermodal rail line will operate four weekly trips to Istanbul, allowing the transport of approximately 12,000 vehicles per year to Turkey. At the same time, this logistics solution will ensure the efficient delivery of production components from Turkey to the Craiova plant.
Güven Özyurt, General Manager of Ford Otosan, underlined the importance of the project in terms of sustainability and operational efficiency, stating: “With the new logistics model we have established between Romania and Turkey, we transport the components necessary for the production activity of our Craiova plant, which currently builds the Ford Puma, Ford Tourneo Courier and Ford Transit Courier models. By capitalizing on the cost advantages of rail transport over road and sea, we improve our competitiveness, while providing a significant contribution to our sustainability goals.”
The Craiova plant operates in three shifts in both the vehicle production area and the engine production area and currently has over 6,600 employees.
