Axionet IoT receives over 26 million Euro in EU funding to develop electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Romania

Axionet IoT, a Romanian entrepreneurial company, has been selected by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) for 26.8 million Euro in funding to develop 496 electric vehicle charging stations in 200 locations across the country.
“We have always wanted to play an important role in accelerating electric mobility in Romania and have actively pursued this opportunity to make a significant contribution to the market. This project is a major achievement for Axionet and a strategic step for Romania in the transition to sustainable, energy-efficient and low-emission transport,” said Gabriel Ioniță, CEO and founder of Axionet.
The project aims to develop 496 charging stations for electric vehicles, in 200 locations across the country, accessible to the public. They are designed to serve both light and heavy vehicles. Thus, 96 of the stations will be for fast charging, with a power of 150 kW, and another 400 will have a power of 350 kW. The project covers key areas in Romania along the TEN-T road network, with the stations being located no more than 3 km from urban exits or nodes, for optimal accessibility. It will improve the charging infrastructure and support the EU’s sustainable transport and emission reduction objectives.
The European Commission, through CINEA, recently declared eligible for funding 39 projects worth a total of 422 million Euro, aimed at developing alternative fuels infrastructure on the TEN-T trans-European transport network. Among the selected projects, three come from Romania, one of them being AXIONET IoT.
The funds will be granted through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, which supports the development of sustainable mobility at European level.
Since 2017, Axionet has implemented over 500 charging locations in various scenarios, from private and industrial use for testing, to electric fleets and public charging. The company is preparing a significant expansion of the network, consolidating its position on the market. Most of its charging points are in the Fast Charge category.
